Adult Education and Community Learning

At North Lincolnshire Adult Education and Community Learning we pride ourselves on delivering a wide range of courses that might be of benefit to your school and local community.

Literacy and numeracy are a big part of our offer and we have helped many adults to read over the years. Recently, the Repair Shop star Jay Blades' journey on learning how to read has been documented on the BBC One film called Jay Blades:” Learning to Read at 51”. Jay Blades was very “emotional” reading his daughter's first letter to him after learning how to read. Jay is clearly not alone as the Literacy Trust states there are 7.1 million adults in the UK described as having "very poor literacy skills".  In the past some of our learners, like Jay, have found great satisfaction in being able to read to their children and help them with homework.

Functional Skills English for adults who do not have a GCSE grade 4 (or A*- C grade). The course covers: developing reading skills, reading to understand and interpret texts, responding to creative texts, essential writing skills, constructing sentences, composing texts, listening and responding to others and participating in discussions.

ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) courses offer an opportunity to improve speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in English. They will help to apply for a job or improve job prospects, talk to doctors and teachers, find out about life in the UK, help children with their homework and engage in the community.

Also, we offer new Essential Digital Skills Qualifications for adults who are looking to learn, update or refresh their knowledge of computers and take an exam at the right level.
